The Institute of Physics Belgrade (IPB) was founded in 1961 by the government of the Republic of Serbia with a mission to conduct high quality research in the area of physics. At present it contributes more than 10% of the total scientific output of the country. IPB is highly recognized research institute at the EU level, being host to four EU Centers of Excellence: CX-CMCS (Centre of Excellence for Computational Modeling of Complex Systems), OPSA (Centre of Excellence for Optical Spectroscopy Applied in Physics, Material Science and Environmental Protection), IPB-CNP (Reinforcing Experimental Centre for Non-Equilibrium Studies with Application in Nano-Technologies, Etching of Integrated Circuits and Environmental Research), and QUPOM (Reinforcing the Centre for Quantum and Optical Metrology).

In the past, IPB was involved in several Grid-related projects. At present, IPB coordinates the Academic and Education Grid Initiative of Serbia (AEGIS) and its participation in EGI. Currently, IPB is partner in the regional HPC project HP-SEE, and coordinates training and dissemination activities workpackage. As a partner in PRACE-1IP and PRACE-2IP, IPB coordinated all HPC-related activities in Serbia.

In 2008, IPB is designated by the Serbian government as the referent institution for Grid computing and HPC in the country, and appointed to represent Serbia in European HPC-related projects and infrastructures. IPB is also designated to coordinate planning and implementation of the Blue Danube National Supercomputing and Data Storage Center, which will serve as a Tier-1 system in PRACE-RI.

Key Persons

Antun BalazE-mail: antun(at)ipb(dot)ac(dot)rs

balaz

Dr. Antun Balaz is an Associate Research Professor at the Institute of Physics Belgrade. He is technical coordinator of AEGIS, and director-designate of Blue Danube National Supercomputing and Data Storage Center. Dr. Balaz was operations (SA1) leader in SEE-GRID-2 and SEE-GRID-SCI projects, and serves as Serbia country representative in EGI and HP-SEE. He also coordinates work of Serbian team in PRACE-1IP and PRACE-2IP, and is a member of PRACE Council. The main research interests of Dr. Balaz are related to the functional formalism in quantum theory and its application to studies of ultra-cold quantum gases, including the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation and effects of interaction and disorder. In his research, he makes extensive use of numerical methods such as path integral Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization. Together with his collaborators, Antun Balaz has recently developed a systematic procedure for obtaining series of effective actions that speed-up the convergence of discretized path integrals to their continuum limits. These effective actions are ideally suited for numerical studies of quantum gases at low temperatures.

Viktor Nedovic | E-mail: viktor(dot)nedovic(at)nauka(dot)gov(dot)rs

nedovic

Dr. Viktor Nedovic is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade. His research interest covers immobilisation, co-immobilisation, encapsulation and bioreactor system design in the fields of food production and fermentation processes. He is author of more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and has served as co-editor of some of the major books on cell immobilisation/encapsulation. During the last three years he serves as Assistant Minister in charge of international S&T cooperation and EU integration in the Serbian Ministry of Science and Technological Development.
